" Tinapay " ~ bread
" Lechon " ~ whole roasted pig
--------------------------------------------

I am just so fond of our local bread sold at old-school bakeries. Buying bread from the  " panaderia  " (bakery)  has always been such a treat for me... looking at the bread through the glass display, and getting to choose your favorites. When I was a kid, your 10.00 pesos could buy you an assortment of bread... from hopia, pan de coco, monay, and my all-time favorite kababayan. Today, my favorites are still there... with a few creative additions... and I have a new favorite bakery too... Kawilihan Bakery! In my opinion, they're one of the best non-commercial bakeries in Metro Manila. The bread products they sell and bake are consistently tasty and baked properly (products intended to be fluffy are fluffy, chewy bread are indeed chewy, and crunchy types are really crunchy).

Just the other day, we passed by Kawilihan to buy our staples... Kababayan, Lakas, Ensaymada, and Pianono. As we were about to leave, our eldest son asked if he could buy the "PIG" bread. I didn't really know what he was talking about... I immediately thought of Hopiang Baboy... but to my surprise and delight, he was referring to the Lechon-shaped bread!

"Lechon" Bread (Php 40.00)

I have seen this bread design featured in one of the local TV shows as an alternative to buying the actual Lechon (Whole Roasted Pig) for the Yuletide season. I've always wanted to buy one, but I never really planned on heading to Malabon just to buy it. So, it really was a nice surprise that Kawilihan Bakery was selling it too!

This kind of bread-design is pretty nice to serve at parties... instead of the usual sliced bread, if you really must have bread (like most Filipinos do, especially when there's pancit or spaghetti) :-) Makes for a great addition to your table setting and a funny conversation piece too! Don't you just love it? :-) I do :-)

So the next time you're in the Anonas-Quezon City area, why not pass by Kawilihan bakery and buy your very own Lechon-bread! Great-looking-funny-looking bread... tasty... and goes well with a whole lot of spreads from peanut butter, jam, butter, nutella, cream cheese, liver spread... go crazy! :-) And while you're there, try their yummy old-school bread too!

  2. [pinkc00kies] -- Me too, I love Kababayan! Especially pag bagong luto and the outside part is crunchy & warm.. Mmmmm sarap! Spanish Bread din.. but sa ibang bakery walang lasa mga Spanish Bread tipid sa palaman and matigas. That's why I love this place. Really... sa Bicol... may specific bakery ba dun na nabilhan mo? I might know someone who can buy for me! Yum!
